USA Water Polo National League Recap

The 2025 National League season wrapped up over the weekend, showcasing some of the best water polo in the United States. The field of competition was expanded this season from 7 teams to 14, adding more competitive teams with collegiate and Olympic level athletes.

What is National League water polo?

National League is the premier men’s water polo league in the United States. The league is organized by USA Water Polo and consists of club and collegiate club teams.

What is the National League format?

Regular season games take place from February to March in California. Then a championship tournament is held in April to determine the winner.

What teams play in the National League?

The league expanded in 2025 to include collegiate club teams affiliated with top water polo programs such as UCLA, USC, and Long Beach. The rest of the league is made up of existing club programs with high-level water polo players, including former national team players.

Is there professional water polo in the US?

Although there is no professional water polo league in the United States, the National League represents the highest level of competition. Players commit to a team for the season and teams have sponsorships.

What players are in the National League?

This year LAAC signed two international Olympic medalists – Dénes Varga and Filip Filipovic. These stars were scoring powerhouses for their respective countries, Hungary and Serbia.

Team USA members Ryder Dodd and Chase Dodd play for Mission (UCLA), while Johnny Hooper plays for The Olympic Club.

This year’s scoring leaders were Riptide’s Dane Howell and Channel Cats Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt with 45 goals each over the course of the season. Ryder Dodd finished 3rd with 42.

Peter Castillo from Mission (UCLA) led the league in kickouts drawn with 42, followed closely by Jack Martin of Trojan (USC) with 41.

Channel Cats goalie Brendon Gyapjas led the league in blocks with 135 throughout the season.
